Aston Martin Residences

Aston Martin Residences, downtown Miami
Despite launching sales at a down time in the luxury condo market, plans for the Aston Martin Residences captured readers. The Coto family of Argentina and Aston Marton unveiled renderings of the sail-shaped building in October. Designed by Revuelta Architecture and Bodas Mian Anger, the 66-story, 390-unit high-rise will be built on the site at 300 Biscayne Boulevard Way, formerly known as the Epic East site. The developers plan to open the sales center in March and break ground by the summer.
The sail design is fitting: the project will be built on the only available piece of land at the mouth of the Miami River.

Miami Beach Convention Center renovation speeds up

Miami Beach Convention Center renovation speeds up

The entire west side of the Miami Beach Convention Center is getting replaced as the renovation and expansion of the facility speed up heading into the first quarter of 2017. No events will be held at the center until late May, and work will continue for months after it partially reopens.

The $600 million redo remains behind schedule after planning, permitting and design changes slowed work earlier this year. The contractor, Clark Construction, is expected to submit a plan to recover lost time in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, construction work has intensified in the weeks after Art Basel. The plan has always been to completely close the whole convention center after the 2016 edition of the international art fair and keep it closed for some particularly heavy work until April 30.

But with the unexpected loss of some business, the city gained some time to catch up. After French design fair Maison & Objet canceled its 2017 show, which was slated for May, the city picked up an extra three weeks to continue work before the halls are needed for booked events. No events will be held at the convention center until May 22.

“Those three weeks will help us significantly,” said city spokeswoman Marcia Monserrat.

Ritz-Carlton Is Out to Make Art Studios the Latest Must-Have Amenity in Luxury Living

Walk into one of Tatiana Blanco’s parties and you’ll find guests gathered around a blank canvas, not a TV or the kitchen table. “I needed an outlet—a place where I could release my emotions more spontaneously. And I saw that my friends did, too,” says the sculptor from her home and studio in Key Biscayne, a small island town across the bridge from Miami. “That’s when we started making group paintings.”

For the past two years, Blanco has provided a communal canvas for friends and visitors to her home, where the tabula rasa has doubled as entertainment and an emotional escape. When word of its meditative power spread across Miami, catching the attention of a luxury real estate developer, an unprecedented plan—one that merged architecture, communal space, and artmaking—was hatched.

In late spring of next year, the Ritz-Carlton Residences Miami Beach, a complex of 111 condos and 15 villas designed by Italian architect Piero Lissoni, will open on a quiet corner along the Surprise Waterway, a canal opening into Biscayne Bay. The residences offer a slew of perks: elegant design, ocean views, a rooftop pool, and a meditation garden. But perhaps their most unique feature is a communal art studio—a room that will be flooded with Miami light and stocked with a never-ending supply of materials, from paint and clay to beads and soft metals, available to all residents, those with art experience and without.

Miami a top homebuilding market to watch in 2017

When it comes to homebuilding, Miami is a top 75 market to watch in 2017, according to a joint report from PwC and the Urban Land Institute.

The city’s No. 62 ranking comes as little surprise, as Miami, while continuing to see strong residential construction spending, has been losing some of its heat. During the month of September, builders spent more than $267 million on new projects, down 14 percent from the same time last year, while year to date, spending was down 4 percent to $4.9 billion. Those numbers are still higher than several markets, but they’ve tapered from the city’s explosive 2014 and 2015.

Check our table below to see how Miami compares:

First look at MDM Development’s new design of Miami Worldcenter Hotel & Expo Center

The developers of the Marriott Marquis Miami Worldcenter Hotel & Expo Center will have their revised plans reviewed by the city.

On Oct. 19, Miami’s Urban Design Review Board will consider the new plan by P&G Investors, an affiliate of MDM Development, for what would be South Florida’s largest hotel at 700 N. Miami Ave. The former site of the Miami Arena is part of the Miami Worldcenter mixed-use project.

In March, MDM Development announced that it would scale down the projectfrom 1,800 rooms to 1,700 rooms and build it in two phases: 1,100 rooms in the first tower and 600 rooms in the second tower. They would rise 54 stories.

The new plans filed with the UDRB reflect those changes, provide more details on the project’s features and include renderings (attached to this story).

The convention and meeting space would remain at 350,000 square feet. That would include two ballrooms, exhibition space, several pre-reception halls and numerous meeting rooms.

The parking spaces would be reduced from 1,250 to 1,128. The project would now total 2.23 million square feet.
